Vocational Nursing Schools
A licensed vocational nurse (LVN) cares for the sick under the direction of doctors and registered nurses. LVNs provide basic care to patients, including bedside care and taking vital signs like pulse and blood pressure. LVNs also give injections and apply dressings, treat bedsores and give messages. They also monitor patients closely, waiting for signs of adverse reactions to medication, and making sure patients drink enough fluids.
Vocational nursing schools prepare you for all of these activities, and also train you to help evaluate patient needs and develop care plans. The curriculum is designed to help you manage nursing aides and work in doctor's offices, nursing homes, hospitals or clinics.
Vocational nursing schools also prepare you to pass the NCLEX-PN, which is a licensing examination necessary for LVNs. Programs at vocational nursing schools last for about 1 year, and are sometimes built into high school curriculums so that graduates can begin working right away.
With a degree from a vocational nursing school, you could begin a reward career taking care of the sick and elderly in nursing homes, hospitals, clinics or private practices. You have a lot of options in this expanding field.
